A book on tape is a good thing.

I read the Host by Stephenie Meyer and loved it. That was NOTHING compared to the pleasure I felt from listening to it. Some stats on the Amazon page but the key there was Kate Reading. After I finished listening, I wanted to TALK like her.

Audio books are great!

I also listened to the Twilight series, and greatly enjoyed those novels too. I listened to all seven of the Harry Potters. Jim Dale, mm mmm mmmmm what a great voice. I have listened to a few of Scott Sigler’s works as well. I can’t listen to them for hours because they are SO frightening. I read Infected, and loved it, but I can only listen to his other stuff 3 chapters at a time, because I know how scary he is. And yet he can be scared himself by a little bumble bee…. go figure!

Take them out when exercising!

With the prevalence of Ipods and the ease of services like Audible.com and through Itunes, Audio books are getting a bit more of a push. I wish that the could find a way to price them in cd form at a way that everyone can afford. I have found that most unabridged audio books are between $30 and $50 dollars. Well that could buy 5 paperbacks, or even 2-3 hardcovers. To only buy one book on cd, where generally you buy it and listen to it only once, well OUCH.

They can be magical
Regardless, audio books are a great way to spend the time when working out, when walking the dog, when driving to work, when going on a car trip. Time flies and you get to experience a great book in a new way.

Also, Dragonrider by Cornelia Funke. Brendan Fraser is the reader, and he does a PHENOMENAL job. Don’t miss it!

YOU JERK!!!

So whover it is that ruined Midnight Sun. Yeah, thanks A LOT. Really appreciate it. I am going to copy from her website, her post…

August 28, 2008 (part II)

As some of you may have heard, my partial draft of Midnight Sun was illegally posted on the Internet and has since been virally distributed without my knowledge or permission or the knowledge or permission of my publisher.

I have a good idea of how the leak happened as there were very few copies of Midnight Sun that left my possession and each was unique. Due to little changes I made to the manuscript at different times, I can tell when each left my possession and to whom it was given. The manuscript that was illegally distributed on the Internet was given to trusted individuals for a good purpose. I have no comment beyond that as I believe that there was no malicious intent with the initial distribution.

I did not want my readers to experience Midnight Sun before it was completed, edited and published. I think it is important for everybody to understand that what happened was a huge violation of my rights as an author, not to mention me as a human being. As the author of the Twilight Saga, I control the copyright and it is up to the owner of the copyright to decide when the books should be made public; this is the same for musicians and filmmakers. Just because someone buys a book or movie or song, or gets a download off the Internet, doesn’t mean that they own the right to reproduce and distribute it. Unfortunately, with the Internet, it is easy for people to obtain and share items that do not legally belong to them. No matter how this is done, it is still dishonest. This has been a very upsetting experience for me, but I hope it will at least leave my fans with a better understanding of copyright and the importance of artistic control.

So where does this leave Midnight Sun? My first feeling was that there was no way to continue. Writing isn’t like math; in math, two plus two always equals four no matter what your mood is like. With writing, the way you feel changes everything. If I tried to write Midnight Sun now, in my current frame of mind, James would probably win and all the Cullens would die, which wouldn’t dovetail too well with the original story. In any case, I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun, and so it is on hold indefinitely.

I’d rather my fans not read this version of Midnight Sun. It was only an incomplete draft; the writing is messy and flawed and full of mistakes. But how do I comment on this violation without driving more people to look for the illegal posting? It has taken me a while to decide how and if I could respond. But to end the confusion, I’ve decided to make the draft available here (at the end of this message on the Midnight Sun page). This way, my readers don’t have to feel they have to make a sacrifice to stay honest. I hope this fragment gives you further insight into Edward’s head and adds a new dimension to the Twilight story. That’s what inspired me to write it in the first place.

I do want to take a moment and thank the wonderful fans who have been so supportive of me over the past three years. I cannot begin to tell you how much each of you means to me. I only hope this note will stop all the confusion and online speculation so that the Twilight universe can once again become the happy escape it used to be. After this incredibly busy year, I am now focusing on spending more time with my family and working on some other writing projects.

–Stephenie

So yes. Whoever you are, you are a jerk. Thanks for ruining this for those of us who love and respect her work.

grrrr

Breaking Dawn, post 3

So, read Breaking Dawn this weekend! Stephenie Meyer really knows how to draw you in. Everyone was amazed at how fast I read that book, but I could NOT put it down.

Out of the four Twilights, I would not say this is my favorite… and I did not like the name choices in it (if you have read it, you understand), BUT I did like the story. There were twists and turns I could not and did not even GUESS or think about.

My problem. Where was the violence? People have been saying that there was excessive violence… but except for one gory scene (which was violent, but not in the same way the end of Eclipse was violent), yeah… not a lot. At the end especially I was expecting more violence, and was a little surprised the way it turned out.

Unlike some others, I did REALLY like this book. I thought that the ending was sweet, the little things that happened, the big things that happened, Bella’s discoveries about herself and I loved the side-tracking and preparation she made. No where NEAR enough Alice though.

That is actually my only problem with the Meyer books. The plot lines get so exciting that you don’t get to kick back and hang out with the Cullens, or with Jake and Seth and Leah. Yeah I know BELLA gets to, but I want to TOO! So that is my opinion of Breaking Dawn.

I loved it, it was a great story, and if you want to be psycho mean, please stay away! But if you haven’t read this story YET (and you should of course), eventual comments may have spoilers. The discovery is as much fun as the destination.

Breaking Dawn, post 2

So a funny thing happened on Stephenie Meyer day….

Like I said, we had our little table with Bloody drinks and Bloody snacks… well in true vampire fashion (though I know not Meyer’s type of vampire), we had a bat!

A little brown bat!
Yes indeed, a bat. Now I was a little surprised since I was not expecting to pick up the table cloth and see a scared little batty! Eventually we did get it outside (though it shuffled back in on its own and then hid for a few minutes before flying around and then flying out the open door we held for it), but in the meantime, a bat gave the SEAL OF APPROVAL to our Stephenie Meyer day festivities. That is all you can ask for :)

Breaking Dawn, post 1

I don’t want you to think that I missed out on the Breaking Dawn extravaganza! I made t-shirts for my coworkers as well as 3 for random people on our reserve list. I brought in hawaiian punch, and put it in a beautiful Venetian Cut Glass pitcher. I also made Red Velvet cupcakes, blood red. So there was a little blood theme. It was really fun. Everyone who came in to get their book was so excited. We had people waiting at the door, it was great fun.

Link to EW with the first chapter: here.

Here are the quotes from the website, all from the book.

1.Alice: “I’ll play you for it. Rock, paper, scissors.”
Edward: “Why don’t you just tell me who wins?”
Alice: “I do. Excellent.”
2. Bella: “Oh, Mike! How will I go on?”
3. Tanya: “Ah, Edward. I’ve missed you.”
4. Emmett: “Oooo, scary.”
5. Bella: “Jasper? What do vampires do for bachelor parties? You’re not taking him to a strip club, are you?”
6. Charlie: “Bells, we’re up to bat.”
7. Edward: “You’re awfully small to be so hugely irritating.”
8. Bella: “Why am I covered in feathers?”
9. Alice: “No one will dare to call you plain when I’m through with you.”
Bella: “Only because they’re afraid you’ll suck their blood.”
10. Edward: “Oops.”
11. Renee: “Alice wouldn’t let us do anything else. Every time we tried, she all but ripped our throats out.”
12. Edward: “Do you want me to sing to you? I’ll sing all night if it will keep the bad dreams away.”
13. Rosalie: “Over my pile of ashes.”
14. Edward: “You look so guilty—like you’ve committed a crime.”
15. Sam: “This is not something our treaty anticipated. This is a danger to every human in the area.”
16. Rosalie: “I’d like to beat you dead.”
17. Jasper: “I can’t understand. I can’t bear this.”
18. Seth: “You’ll hurt her. Let her go.”
19. Carlisle: “I’ve seen vampire venom work miracles, but there are conditions that even venom cannot overcome.”
20. Jacob: “I’ll kill you myself! I’ll do it now!”
21. Bella: “Should I be afraid?”
Edward: “Terrified.”

Some more great photos are at Vball Lover’s Flickr.com page. Definitely check it out. Lots of great stuff!

I still have not read it yet. I’m going on vacation this weekend. So I will have had to wait an ENTIRE WEEK to start it. EEK! So NO spoilers, well… no spoilers ever, that’s just rude, but definitely not until I’ve read it.

Also, going to listen to the Host in the car. Gotta love Stephenie Meyer. :)

PS. Don’t forget the movie is coming out December 12th. EEK!!!!

Stephenie Meyer day

First, you HAVE bought your copy of Host that went on sale today… right?
It is beautiful, and bigger than I thought. Going by the advance, I thought it would be a little thinner, but for $26.99 (ouch) it works for its thickness. It really was a great book, and has gotten some really good reviews.

Secondly, in the film version of Twilight. Reality is coming closer. And yes, you know where I will be on December 12th.

Stephenie Meyer Event: Part One

Don’t forget that today is Bella’s Birthday! Head over to the Forks, Washington website, where they have an entire page of Twilight points of interest!

HPIM1889.jpg

I went to the Stephenie Meyer booksigning at the Barnes and Noble in Burlington Mass on September 11th, 2007.
HPIM1951.jpg

I will be splitting my review into three parts. This first part will be on general excitement with photos. Next will be more excitement with videos and the final part will be a critical review of the signing itself.

First, the excitement. Well, I got there at 2:30 pm, and there were probably already 20 people in line ahead of me, not counting the 20-30 that had already gotten their red wristbands. There was so much excitement that it was really reallly cool. Many people had dressed in their Twilight shirts. One woman had a Forks Washington t-shirt. I had on the t-shirt I made for work plus my own pin from Forks that my dad got when he rode his bike through there. Books that I had brought were my Twilight, my british Twilight, advance reader’s copy of New Moon and my hardcover Eclipse. This means that I brought a total of 4 books. There was no limit to books for being signed which was very cool, though there was a limit to personal autographs. There were some girls who brought even more than I. shown here…
HPIM1897.jpg

This was actually one of my chair buddies. We hung out for so long that we became friends. Remember, I got there at 2:30, and we were there until 7:20 when she arrived, through about 8:30 when we got to have her sign our books.
HPIM1922.jpg

These were my other chair buddies:
Before makeup: HPIM1884.jpg and now after makeup, HPIM1893.jpg.

Here are some shots of the store, FULL of Twilight fans. Keep in mind that these photos are when people were still milling about, it got much fuller. HPIM1890.jpg HPIM1919.jpg

Here are some shots of Stephenie from her Q&A section.

HPIM1929.jpg
HPIM1928.jpg

This is when we finally got close!!!

HPIM1945.jpg

I cannot begin to describe how amazing this event was. The people I sat with were Great and the enthusiasm was fantastic. It must be amazing for Stephenie that after only having had books out for two years, she has HUNDREDS of people show up at every signing. I would say there were over 500 people inside, not counting the hundred outside.

*cheers to Stephenie!!!*

All of my photos are on my Flickr page.
