Official Little Brown report on Stephenie Meyer

Okay, so I’ll admit it. I have been trying to find the first chapter of Eclipse so that I can post it here for you. To no avail.

This is what I did find out. There was NO LAYDOWN for the Special Edition of New Moon. I understand that people were saying there was one for May 5th. Yeah, no. This information was gained from Andy S. at Little Brown’s customer service.

That said, I believe that there are still restrictions on when the first chapter of Eclipse can be posted online. Stephenie will be the first to legitimately post it on her site, www.stepheniemeyer.com. So continue to check there!

And I was searching Youtube and found this. Enjoy!

Picoult… Comic Book Writer

Wonder Woman
DC’s Wonder Woman finally gets a top level female author!!! Here is an interview with Jodi who is a new writer in the Comic world, writing Wonder Woman. And a Quote from that interview!

NRAMA: Right, efforts to give her an identity in the past have usually involved depowering her…

JP: Right, and that takes me back to the guys who were writing her. I don’t know why she’s always victimized, because to me, that’s one of the most attractive things about Wonder Woman – she is the most powerful woman! And that’s an amazing and wonderful thing.

I think that there’s a difference between having insecurities at an emotional level, and having insecurities at a physical level. And that becomes a very interesting conundrum. What if you can punch a hole through a wall, and you can get yourself out of any physical mess necessary, and you are strength-matched to someone like Superman, but you are a little unsure about who you are, deep inside, and how you want others to see you?

And from a Comiccon.com article,

Since it’s still several months away, Picoult didn’t want to spoil anything about her upcoming story, but noted she did try for one change in the character. “I actually tried to get Wonder Woman a breast reduction,” Picoult joked. “DC didn’t go for it. As a woman writing this, I thought, ‘there’s no way I would fight crime in a bustier,’ but I was overruled. Comic books will always be a venue for teenage boys, so the costume stays!”

I don’t have my copies of the Wonder Woman comic, but I will soon, have no fear. And then at Jodi’s booksigning, (more on that later), I will get them autographed. Its a good life. So if you like comics (or regardless, support your local authors!) pick up Wonder Woman by Jodi Picoult on March 28th!

Deathly Hallows

Who, at this point, has NOT read Harry Potter? Well, if you have not read it, I am sure you have at least HEARD about it.

Just a little post to say that Harry Potter #7 will not be called, Harry Potter and the Total and Complete Blood Bath, like I supposed. It will actually be called,

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

If you don’t believe me, you can go to The Leaky Cauldron and read more.

From the same site, I thought this was funny,

Jo Rowling has said it would be the size of the Encyclopedia Brittanica; however, she also said, during the TLC/MN interview, that she feels it will be shorter than Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

So, what’s going to happen? Beats us. There’s a big fight with Voldemort coming, we know that.

There is still no laydown date for HP#7, but the chances of it being released on 07/07/07 are even MORE unlikely now that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix(the movie) is being released on the 13th of July. There is no way a book like HP#7 and HP#5 the movie will be released so close together.
I feel like Veruca Salt in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, “But I want it NOW.”

Dairy Queen, D.J. Schwenk

If you were wondering what my “Best Book of 2006″ was, you can stop RIGHT HERE. Dairy Queen by Catherine Murdock is phenomenal. We got this book as an advance, and I DEVOURED it. It was phenomenal. Another young adult read, but so creative and enjoyable. Here is the book’s description,

When you don’t talk, there’s a lot of stuff that ends up not getting said. Harsh words indeed, from Brian Nelson of all people. But, D. J. can’t help admitting, maybe he’s right. When you don’t talk, there’s a lot of stuff that ends up not getting said. Stuff like why her best friend, Amber, isn’t so friendly anymore. Or why her little brother, Curtis, never opens his mouth. Why her mom has two jobs and a big secret. Why her college-football-star brothers won’t even call home. Why her dad would go ballistic if she tried out for the high school football team herself. And why Brian is so, so out of her league. When you don’t talk, there’s a lot of stuff that ends up not getting said. Welcome to the summer that fifteen-year-old D. J. Schwenk of Red Bend, Wisconsin, learns to talk, and ends up having an awful lot of stuff to say.

Additionally, it recieved a STARRED review from Publishers Weekly:

Publishers Weekly, Starred : “Finally, a football book a girl can love. . . . With humor, sports action and intelligence abundant, this tale has something for everyone.”

dairy queen

Dairy Queen is still only available in hardcover, but it is coming out in paperback in June of 2007.

And have no fear gentle Readers… The Off-Season, the sequel, will be coming out June 4, 2007.

Coal Black Horse

Coal Black Horse by Robert Olmstead… it was something. Definitely a Literary marvel, but 100% not my type of reading. It is set in the Civil War, and a boy is sent off by his mother to bring back his father. She basically tells him not to help anyone and not to get help by anyone. He gets help in the form of a horse, described as “coal black.”

Coal black horse

A review from Publishers Weekly

Olmstead’s new work (after Stay Here with Me) is a convulsive, bloody Civil War tale that tracks a boy’s search for his father on the battlefield at Gettysburg. At 14, Robey Childs is on the cusp of manhood when he sets off from the family farm at his mother’s behest to find his soldier father and bring him home. A sympathetic farmer loans Robey an uncommonly beautiful and sturdy black horse. On the road, Robey passes carts carrying the maimed and dead, and bands of Native Americans and runaway slaves. A chain of horrific trials begins for Robey when a man dressed as a woman shoots him and steals the horse. He’s taken prisoner as a suspected spy, witnesses a girl’s rape and is caught up in a carnage-drenched raid. However, he survives the attack, is reunited with the stolen horse and sets out again, days later finding his father on the battlefield, mortally wounded. Robey can’t save his father, but he can try to save the raped girl, Rachel, from further violence. His return home and his testimony to what he saw forms a powerful, redemptive narrative.

I am also going to quote the Booklist blurb, because it gives a better idea of who would like this book. So, from Booklist,

Olmstead has fashioned an absorbing tale that is a cross between two of the most respected and widely read Civil War novels. Combining elements of the rite-of-passage motif employed by Stephen Crane in The Red Badge of Courage with the classic odyssey plot device recycled so effectively by Charles Frazier in Cold Mountain (1997), he has provided a fresh perspective on an old–but never timeworn–subject. When 14-year-old Robey Child is sent by his mother to search for his father, a doomed soldier, he witnesses the horrors of war both on and off the battlefield. Arrayed in a jacket (gray on one side, blue on the other) custom made by his mother and riding a talismanic coal black horse, he embarks upon a life-altering journey that will challenge him physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Olmstead does not shy away from the brutal reality of warfare, and his starkly powerful descriptions of violence and carnage are harrowing. Civil War buffs will appreciate the attention to detail; general readers will be mesmerized by the powerfully evocative journey. Margaret Flanagan

Basically he has a terrible lot and gets caught up in the Civil War. He sees rape, murder, horrible and terrible deaths, and through it all is set on a mission to find his father, and catch back up with the “Coal Black Horse.” I read this book because, first, what a gorgeous cover, and second, I am interested in horses. It was just not enough for me to like it overall. There were some amazing passages and the writing style was amazing, but definitely not my sort of book. If you like books that can be described as literary fiction, then you would like this. Additionally if you like Civil War fiction, you would like it. Check it out (at your local Independent bookshop!) on April 10th, 2007 when it goes on sale! See if you like it more than me!

What is your favorite Anne McCaffrey?

As the QUEEN of Science-Fiction and Fantasy, Anne McCaffrey has written quite a few things. Do you have a favorite? I know it is hard because everything is just so darn enjoyable. Shall we review the series for kicks?

Freedom: The Freedom series is about Kris Bjornson and Zainal, a Catteni, who fight to free the humans, deski, rugerians, catteni and even the Turs from the Eosi. They also wonder… who ARE the farmers? This is a four book series.
McCaffrey Freedom
Titles are :
Freedom’s Landing, Freedom’s Choice, Freedom’s Challenge, and Freedom’s Ransom.
This series has some REALLY interesting human/alien interactions, but sadly, as we get into books three and four, where did the aliens GO?? I know they were fighting to free Earth, but hopefully she is hard at work on a book 5 to free the Deskis and others.

Next, the Crystal Singer Series
Not very surprisingly, about people who use crystals in their singing. Get it?
Titles are: Crystal Singer, Killashandra and Crystal Line

And now, her most popular series, PERN. I will not link to each book, because that would be insane. The list of titles is over here at her website and you should definitely check it out. You are supposed to read it in the order that she wrote it, NOT timeline wise according to the books themselves. This is very important. ALWAYS start with the “Dragonriders of Pern” trilogy. My personal favorites in Pern are the “The Harper Hall Trilogy” and “The Dolphins of Pern.” Though…. I love “Masterharper of Pern” as well. This is also a series she is still working on. She had begun writing with her son, which I think is an excellent way to segway into a new PERN author.

The Petaybee Series was also written with Elizabeth Ann Scarborough and is another favorite. I have not re-read these titles in some time but they did recently release two new “Twins of Petaybee” books. This is actually a new series within Petaybee. They are Clhangelings and Maelstrom which was just released yesterday actually. The original three titles of the series are Powers That Be, Power Lines, and Power Play.
A description from the third title, from the previous link:

Petaybee was growing up. Day by day, the sentient planet - like any child - was learning to recognize and understand the meaning of outside stimuli, to respond to those stimuli, to communicate its own needs and desires . . . even to use human speech.

The Brain & Brawn Ship Series is another group author project. Margaret Ball, Mercedes Lackey, S.M. Stirling, and Jody Lynn Nye each wrote books with Anne in this series. Stirling even went on to write his own. All of these books are based around the impressive future technology to preserve a human body inside a ship console, while still letting the brain/personality of the person be used. It is a voluntary procedure that allows the people to use their brains to control ships (or cities). Really interesting science fiction writing here. Here is a description from the first in this series,

Helva was born with massive debilitating physical deformities. Her brain, however, was unaffected and highly intelligent. Placed inside a capsule which overcame all her physical disabilities through advanced cybernetic enhancements, Helva was a formidable individual. Beyond her other distinctions was a love of music. Placed inside a spaceship with her Brawn at her side, she became The Ship Who Sang.

The Ship Who Sang (by herself), Partnership, with M. Ball, The Ship Who Searched, with M. Lackey, Baen Aug 1992 (this is one of my favorites in the series), City Who Fought, with S.M. Stirling, Ship Who Won, with Jody Lynn Nye, Ship Avenged, with S.M. Stirling

Brain & Brawn Compilations: just pairings of 2 different novels.
Brain Ships, The City and the Ship, and The Ship Who Saved the Worlds

Short Stories (no links available)
The Ship Who Returned, FAR HORIZONS, Silverberg 1999

And now… telepathic powers. Always a good time. The Tower & Hive Series consist of five books. The Rowan (aka A Meeting of Minds), Damia, Damia’s ChildrenLyon’s Pride, To Ride Pegasus, Pegasus in Flight, and Pegasus In Space. And here is a quote that describes some of the characters, from the third book of the series,

here is Peter Reidinger, a teenage paraplegic who happens to be the strongest telekinetic ever, his mind capable of teleporting objects and people thousands of miles in the blink of an eye. Yet all his power cannot repair his damaged spine or allow him to feel the gentle touch of a loved one . . . Rhyssa Owen, the powerful telepath and mother hen to Peter and the rest of her “children” - and a fierce, unrelenting fighter against the prejudice that would deny the Talented their right to lead happy and productive lives . . . and Amariyah, an orphan girl who loves two things in the world above all others: gardening and Peter Reidinger. And woe to anyone who harms either one of them - for the young girl’s talent may prove to be the most amazing of all.

Dinosaur Planet Series was also with Jody Lynn Nye and Elizabeth Moon. Can you see who some of Anne’s favorite people to work with are? Honestly, I do not think I have read the two Dinosaur Planet books. I do make up for that for having read the Planet Pirates compilation about 30 times. The Mystery of Ireta is the compilation of Dinosaur Planet and Dinosaur Planet Survivors, which are both out of print on their own.
The Planet Pirates is the compilation of Death of Sleep, Sassinak, and Generation Warriors, written by J.L. Nye and E. Moon from outlines by and discussions with Anne McCaffrey.
Here is a quote from Planet Pirates,

How together Sassinak and Lunzie save first a world, and then a confederation of worlds — and almost in passing establish amity between the genetically engineered Heavy Worlders and normal humanity — is the story of The Planet Pirates.

Last for the series I will be talking about is that of Acorna, the Unicorn Girl. The Acorna Series
was written with Margaret Ball, Elizabeth Ann Scarborough, and then there is a compilation with various other authors. It begins with Acorna, with Margaret Ball in 1997, and continues through, Acorna’s Quest, with M. Ball. The rest of the series is written with E. A. Scarborough. This includes Acorna’s People, Acorna’s World, Acorna’s Search, Acorna’s Rebels, and Acorna’s Triumph. This is another series that is ongoing as well. And surprisingly, a quote!

She was just a little girl. With a tiny horn in the center of her forehead, funny-looking feet, beautiful silver hair, and several curious powers: The ability to purify air and water, make plants grow, and heal scars and broken bones. A trio of grizzled prospectors found her drifting in an escape pod amid the asteroids, adopted her, and took her home to sizzling controversy. Officious bureaucrats wanted to put Acorna in a home and cut off her “deformity.” Ambitious scientists wanted to isolate and study the “unicorn girl.” Which was worse?

So I have given you a wide variety of her titles. I have not included everything of course. Her website (though not as updated as I would like) gives lists of all of her works, including other genre titles and full information about her other science fiction and fantasy titles. Do give her a go. All of her stuff has a wonderful feel and if you like science fiction, she has a lot of hard core stuff. Even her general fantasy, like Pern, has science fiction involved, and she makes it fun and interesting. I hope you enjoyed this review, and if you have not tried Anne McCaffrey yet, I hope this helps you to figure out with one to start with.

Also…. as to my own favorite… With each section, I kept saying, “This is my favorite,” “No… this is my favorite.” If I had to choose, it would be the Freedom series, but some of my favorite ALL TIME characters live on Pern, plus Acorna is awesome, and I love The Planet Pirates. I hope you will tell me who your favorite it, and have a lovely day.
