Changes in Cover Art

First, this is my 100th post!
Now, covers change all the time. That is something we are used to. When a book goes from hardcover to paperback, the cover sometimes changes. When a book is released in paperback but then subsequent books by that author are more popular, they often re-release the books with new covers (think Jodi Picoult and Kris Radish). Another change that we all know from Harry Potter is the differences between US covers and International covers. I wanted to highlight one title in particular because when it came out, it was a nothing book with the BEST COVER EVER and then when the authors newer books came out, they re-released this book with terrible covers.
That author is Dan Brown. Side note of some coolness, Dan Brown is a New Hampshire author, and we had him come to the store for Angels & Demons and he did a signing. Innisfree Bookshop ahead of the times AGAIN! Ha!
Anyways, Angels & Demons was one of his first books and the cover was amazing. Here it is.
angels and demons original cover

Seriously. Look at it upside down. IT IS JUST AS COOL BECAUSE IT IS THE SAME. Yeah, super cool. Then we hear they are going to re-release it in hardcover. You can imagine our excitement. We got this…

rerelease angels and demons

Yeah. Not really anything to write home about… The international (Australian) edition is pretty cool though,

blue angel and demons

There was also the Special Illustrated Edition cover. Not as cool as the first, but interesting.

a&d illustrated edition

Then there is the regular mass market edition
us massmarket angels and demon

and the larger mass market edition.
large A&D massmarket

So you can see all the differences. Some were amazing, some were blah, but they were ALL for the same book. Imagine if you hadn’t remembered that you had read the book but you remembered the cover, you might buy it again because the cover was so different! And isn’t THAT annoying! Cover differences are pretty cool and with our world being so global, you can easily get copies of your favorite books with their international covers almost as easily as you can the US editions. (I know I do that all the time.)

Summer Book Signings

More personal information. I work at the FABULOUS, SUPREME, AMAZING, Innisfree Bookshop in Meredith New Hampshire. A jewel among bookshops, let me assure you. We are part of the Mill Falls Marketplace and if you click on Innisfree Bookshop on that list (alphabetical…) you can see my shop! I personally worked there in high school and college and am now a Full-time member of the Innisfree Team. :)

Now onto the JUICY stuff. The booksignings. (I began running these events last year, actually using it as my internship for my Senior Internship class for college.) This is my second year and it should be even better than ever!!! So far we just have two fabulous ladies reserved. But oh the fabulousness!!!

Barbara Delinsky will be at the shop on Saturday July 7th from 2:00-4:00 pm. She always draws a large crowd, but seriously, NICEST lady there ever was. Tanya on staff and I had gone hiking last summer and who did we see? Thats right, Barbara. The Joy of a small town. Barbara’s new book is Family Tree. From her website,

When a white couple gives birth to a baby with distinctly black features, a family is thrown into turmoil….Family Tree delves into issues of trust, honesty, privilege, and identity. It debates the way we define ourselves, and explores the duplicity of political correctness and personal prejudice.

Later on in July, Jodi Picoult will be joining us on Wednesday July 25th from 1:00-3:00 pm. This is a change from our regular Saturday from 2:00-4:00 setup, but that was the only time she was available, so presto!

A Publisher’s Weekly, STARRED review,

Bestseller Picoult takes on another contemporary hot-button issue in her brilliantly told new thriller…the author’s insights into her characters’ deep-seated emotions brings this ripped-from-the-headlines read chillingly alive.”

And a description from her website,

In Sterling, New Hampshire, 17-year-old high school student Peter Houghton has endured years of verbal and physical abuse at the hands of classmates. His best friend, Josie Cormier, succumbed to peer pressure and now hangs out with the popular crowd that often instigates the harassment. One final incident of bullying sends Peter over the edge and leads him to commit an act of violence that forever changes the lives of Sterling’s residents.

Rich with psychological and social insight, Nineteen Minutes is a riveting, poignant, and thought-provoking novel that has at its center a haunting question. Do we ever really know someone?

There has been some debate over this book. The fictional town of Sterling New Hampshire is incredibly similar to Hanover, where Jodi lives. Not surprising… but because the town and the high school are so similar to the real town and the real high school, even though the events in the novel have never happened in real life, Hanover High School has decided to remove Nineteen Minutes from its required reading list. This does not mean the book is banned. There was a class where Nineteen Minutes was going to be required for all students to read. They just knocked it down to voluntary. The students (about half of which decided to read the book regardless of required versus not) were allowed early editions to study as part of a class.

My favorite quote, from an associated press article, here at the The copycateffect.blogspot.com,

Picoult said in one class, Nineteen Minutes was being taught alongside James Dickey’s Deliverance, which depicts sodomy and violence, Vladimir Nabokov’s child-sex novel Lolita, and Anthony Burgess’ violent The Clockwork Orange.

“I don’t know really what makes ‘Lolita’ any less disturbing than Nineteen Minutes, ” she said. - - Beverley Wang, reporter, The Associated Press

These are the two authors that are so far confirmed, but I shall update as more choose their day!

Picoult… Comic Book Writer

Wonder Woman
DC’s Wonder Woman finally gets a top level female author!!! Here is an interview with Jodi who is a new writer in the Comic world, writing Wonder Woman. And a Quote from that interview!

NRAMA: Right, efforts to give her an identity in the past have usually involved depowering her…

JP: Right, and that takes me back to the guys who were writing her. I don’t know why she’s always victimized, because to me, that’s one of the most attractive things about Wonder Woman – she is the most powerful woman! And that’s an amazing and wonderful thing.

I think that there’s a difference between having insecurities at an emotional level, and having insecurities at a physical level. And that becomes a very interesting conundrum. What if you can punch a hole through a wall, and you can get yourself out of any physical mess necessary, and you are strength-matched to someone like Superman, but you are a little unsure about who you are, deep inside, and how you want others to see you?

And from a Comiccon.com article,

Since it’s still several months away, Picoult didn’t want to spoil anything about her upcoming story, but noted she did try for one change in the character. “I actually tried to get Wonder Woman a breast reduction,” Picoult joked. “DC didn’t go for it. As a woman writing this, I thought, ‘there’s no way I would fight crime in a bustier,’ but I was overruled. Comic books will always be a venue for teenage boys, so the costume stays!”

I don’t have my copies of the Wonder Woman comic, but I will soon, have no fear. And then at Jodi’s booksigning, (more on that later), I will get them autographed. Its a good life. So if you like comics (or regardless, support your local authors!) pick up Wonder Woman by Jodi Picoult on March 28th!

Local Flair, Local Flavor

I am from the grand state of New Hampshire. Yay Granite!!! And we have quite a few wonderful authors who have gone on to quite high levels. Everyone knows Dan Brown of course, but also Barbara Delinsky, Jodi Picoult and Robin Cook all live in our state.

Another local talent is Joe Monninger. He taught at the college I went to. He is friends with my dad. Even his dogs go to the same vet as mine. (His memoir, Home Waters is about one of his past pooches.)

Two Ton: One Fight, One Night by Monninger

Casey over at Maisonbisson.com has reviewed Joe’s newest book, “Two Ton: One Night, One Fight — Tony Galento v. Joe Louis.,” a boxing biography. There is another post he did on the topic here.

Also, Here on New Hampshire Public Radio there is an interview with Joe. Check it out. It is from December of 2006.

Joe is a great writer, great teacher, and all around nice guy. If you have interest in boxing, dogs, or buiding a house in New England, then check out Joe’s stuff.
