Official Little Brown report on Stephenie Meyer

Okay, so I’ll admit it. I have been trying to find the first chapter of Eclipse so that I can post it here for you. To no avail.

This is what I did find out. There was NO LAYDOWN for the Special Edition of New Moon. I understand that people were saying there was one for May 5th. Yeah, no. This information was gained from Andy S. at Little Brown’s customer service.

That said, I believe that there are still restrictions on when the first chapter of Eclipse can be posted online. Stephenie will be the first to legitimately post it on her site, www.stepheniemeyer.com. So continue to check there!

And I was searching Youtube and found this. Enjoy!

Green Riders

You want a thrilling fantasy? Okay, look NO further!

Kristen Britain’s Green Rider Trilogy. Green Rider, First Rider’s Call and the High King’s Tomb. The first two are available in paperback and then the third is being released on either July 1st or November 6th. Dear god I pray for July….

Regardless of which one it is, I for one CANNOT wait until that day. These are Great reads. G-R-E-A-T.

Green Rider Briatin

From an Interview with Amazon.co.uk,

Amazon.co.uk: Any specially interesting feedback or comments?

Britain: My favourite kind of feedback is when readers tell me they were totally swept away by the book and lost sleep over it because they couldn’t put it down. While I’m sorry it causes some readers to go to work or school in a groggy state, it makes me feel as if I did my job.

That is DEFINITELY the case with me!

Here is a posted review from SFF World.com

Submitted by Helen Kerslake (Apr 10, 2005)

‘Green Rider’ tells the story of a young girl, Karigan, who must grow up and learn quickly from her experiences as she leaves the shelter of Selium and is thrust into the harsh reality of life outside her home province. She encounters a Green Rider bearing an important message for the King which will prove the difference between his life and death, however the messenger is murdered and dies at Karigan’s feet leaving her to pick up the task from where he left off. The book begins well, with the opening chapter setting the scene for the world which the story is based around, and learn of both the current dangers threatening the land as well as developing a sense of fear for dangers yet to come. Kristen Britain has an excellent writing style which draws you firmly into the world of her main character while remaining uncomplicated by flowery language, leaving you free to enjoy the story without battling with unnecessary wording. I particularly enjoyed how this book was a stand-alone story, unlike so many fantasy novels which only really exist as a series, because this meant that instead of having to incorporate a massive amount of background and history the author was able to plunge straight into the tale. The first half of the book is non-stop action, provides great entertainment and keeps the reader wanting to learn more. Halfway through the pace of events seems to slow down a bit, however the focus becomes characters and their motivations with several well-planned revelations coming to light.

First Riders Call Britain

Check your local bookstores for these first two titles, and start looking (either in July or November, No worries, Ill update again when it is more specific) for the third! and remember, Support your Local INDEPENDENT bookshop!

Prom Nights from HELL

An American High School tradition, the Prom Night… (do other countries have proms?) However, it is not always perfection. Sometimes (think Buffy in the original movie of Buffy the Vampire Slayer) our prom nights end in disaster. And, it is always fun to read about OTHERS misfortunes. Along that idea, Meg Cabot, Stephenie Meyer, Kim Harrison, Michele Jaffe and Lauren Myracle have brought us, Prom Nights from Hell.

Prom nights from hell

From the Harper Collins website for the book,

Prom Nights from Hell
by Meg Cabot, Stephenie Meyer, Kim Harrison, Lauren Myracle and Michele Jaffe

In this exciting collection, bestselling authors Meg Cabot (How to Be Popular), Kim Harrison (A Fistful of Charms), Michele Jaffe (Bad Kitty), Stephenie Meyer (Twilight), and Lauren Myracle (ttyl) take bad prom nights to a whole new level—a paranormally bad level. Wardrobe malfunctions and two left feet don’t hold a candle to discovering your date is the Grim Reaper—and he isn’t here to tell you how hot you look.

From angels fighting demons to a creepy take on getting what you wish for, these five stories will entertain better than any DJ in a bad tux. No corsage or limo rental necessary. Just good, scary fun.

That site also connects you to the individual author’s sites.

We all know that this blog LOVES Stephenie Meyer. Also Meg Cabot, with strong interest in Kim Harrison. I like others in the same blogging genre as Myracle though I have yet to read her stuff (think back to my blog post on Shana Norris’s new 2008 title Libby Fawcett, same idea). I need to do some research into Jaffe as I have not heard of her before. But she is hobnobbing with some good folk, and connections are everything in this business!

It has a book embargo for April 24th this year, (right at the beginning of PROM SEASON!!!) so check it out at your local independent bookshop!

“Walking Spanish down the hall”

A new unique idea for promotional tools, and one that will really stick with you. This cube of note-pad paper is for promotion of Then We Came to the End by Joshua Ferris.
Then we came to the End by Joshua Ferris
Released on March 18, 2007, this new novel is available for purchase everywhere. When you walk into your store, see if THEY are using their cubes, if they were lucky enough to get one! Onto the reviews!

Here is a review from the New York Times writer James Poniewozik.

It is a brave author who embeds the rationale for writing his novel into the novel itself. But 70 pages into Joshua Ferris’s first novel, set in a white-collar office, we meet Hank Neary, an advertising copywriter writing his first novel, set in a white-collar office. Ferris has the good sense to make Neary’s earnest project seem slightly ridiculous. Neary describes his book as “small and angry.” His co-workers tactfully suggest more appealing topics. He rejects them. “The fact that we spend most of our lives at work, that interests me,” he says. “A small, angry book about work,” his colleagues think. “There was a fun read on the beach.”

Above all, Ferris has a sixth sense for paranoia. Information professionals crave information, and when it is denied them — who is going next, how many and why — they spin superstitious theories and adopt curious totems. The employees discover that the office coordinator keeps tabs on which furniture belongs in which offices, and they fear that their chairs — scavenged from laid-off peers with better furniture, in a round-robin so complex no one remembers whose Aeron was originally whose — will get them fired. The chair becomes a symbol for all that is hated and lusted-after about work. It is a prison and a status symbol, a reminder that “their” offices are not really their own, a means of exercising minor tyranny, a reward, a throne, a life preserver.

And from that same link, the first chapter of the novel.

WE WERE FRACTIOUS AND overpaid. Our mornings lacked promise. At least those of us who smoked had something to look forward to at ten-fifteen. Most of us liked most everyone, a few of us hated specific individuals, one or two people loved everyone and everything. Those who loved everyone were unanimously reviled. We loved free bagels in the morning. They happened all too infrequently. Our benefits were astonishing in comprehensiveness and quality of care. Sometimes we questioned whether they were worth it. We thought moving to India might be better, or going back to nursing school. Doing something with the handicapped or working with our hands. No one ever acted on these impulses, despite their daily, sometimes hourly contractions. Instead we met in conference rooms to discuss the issues of the day.

FYI, “Walking Spanish down the hall” is the axiom for getting fired in the novel. So go check out this hilarious debut novel, all the reviews give the impression that you Won’t regret it. Remember the book is already in stores now so go check out your local independent bookshop and pick it up.

Picoult… Comic Book Writer

Wonder Woman
DC’s Wonder Woman finally gets a top level female author!!! Here is an interview with Jodi who is a new writer in the Comic world, writing Wonder Woman. And a Quote from that interview!

NRAMA: Right, efforts to give her an identity in the past have usually involved depowering her…

JP: Right, and that takes me back to the guys who were writing her. I don’t know why she’s always victimized, because to me, that’s one of the most attractive things about Wonder Woman – she is the most powerful woman! And that’s an amazing and wonderful thing.

I think that there’s a difference between having insecurities at an emotional level, and having insecurities at a physical level. And that becomes a very interesting conundrum. What if you can punch a hole through a wall, and you can get yourself out of any physical mess necessary, and you are strength-matched to someone like Superman, but you are a little unsure about who you are, deep inside, and how you want others to see you?

And from a Comiccon.com article,

Since it’s still several months away, Picoult didn’t want to spoil anything about her upcoming story, but noted she did try for one change in the character. “I actually tried to get Wonder Woman a breast reduction,” Picoult joked. “DC didn’t go for it. As a woman writing this, I thought, ‘there’s no way I would fight crime in a bustier,’ but I was overruled. Comic books will always be a venue for teenage boys, so the costume stays!”

I don’t have my copies of the Wonder Woman comic, but I will soon, have no fear. And then at Jodi’s booksigning, (more on that later), I will get them autographed. Its a good life. So if you like comics (or regardless, support your local authors!) pick up Wonder Woman by Jodi Picoult on March 28th!

Thursday Next

Thursday Next

Jasper Fforde writes mystery/fantasy mystery novels. (At our shop, we alternate between regular mystery and sfi-fi/fantasy for his stuff.) Two of our staff members just love him to death and eagerly await anything new that he writes. From his website,

Hello! If you are completely new to my writing, the best place to start is either with the ‘Thursday Next’ series or the ‘Nursery Crime’ Series. If you opt for the former there are four books so far: The Eyre Affair, Lost in a Good Book, The Well of Lost Plots and Something Rotten. If you opt for the latter, The Big Over Easy was published in 2005 with the second, The Fourth Bear, released in the summer of 2006. It’s best to read the ‘Thursday Next’ series in order, the ‘Nursery Crime’ Series less so.

Thursday next

This is the new promo kit that we got for the new Thursday Next novel. It includes a cd with a reading, a pin, a bumper sticker, and a short “deleted scene” chapter. Very funny stuff. A quote about the Thursday Next novels, from his website….

Here at thursdaynext.com we have put together as much information about the shadowy heroine of The Eyre Affair fame as we can within the strict guidelines of the Special Operations Network. From her disputed birthdate to her disappearance in November 1985 and then to her reappearance in 1988 and her contribution to the SuperHoop ‘88 Croquet final, we have pieced together as much as we can. I will be adding to this site as and when I have new information, so stay tuned.
-Millon De Floss

The new Thursday Next novel comes out this summer, July 23rd (or July 5th if you are a lucky Brit). Also, on his appearances page, there are many United States summer signings, so check it out!
