More of a home tip than a book tip

Everyone has issues with fruit flies at this time of year. I know we do at my house. I found a great way to get rid of them, without harsh chemicals, from my friend Sara. It is very simple, and only uses items that you would already have in your house (or can easily get at your local market).

To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass, fill it halfway with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid; mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!

Thats it! And it really works! We emptied our glass today which had bunches of dead flies in it and we only started it on Wednesday. So if you have a fruit fly problem, give this natural treatment a go!

To read or not to read…

The NEA put out an interesting article about the reading habits of today. It varies through all age groups, though from what I could find is limited to the United States. Foreign readers will probably not be surprised by the downward trend in… everything, because even though we are part of the developed world, if there is a list, the US is at the bottom of it. Unless the top is the worst, then we are there.

books

Regardless, this is a really interesting article about the trends that we are seeing. There are some nice graphs and charts if you don’t want to read thoroughly. Enjoy!

Update to a Pdf Infection

Hey there, as per Scott’s website, you should go download the pdf NOW.

Also, here is the link to do it!! http://www.randomhouse.com/crown/infected/downloads/infected_novel.pdf

From his website,

Crown Publishing is letting me give away the PDF of INFECTED from March 27 through March 31, leading up to the hardcover in-store release on April 1. So download it! Feel free to email the link to anyone you know.

Please do not email the PDF, email the LINK. This is so I can prove to Crown the value in giving away content, and if your friends click on the link, that counts on their server stats - emailing the PDF doesn’t count on the stats.
THANKS & ENJOY!

Don’t worry about downloading something entitled, “INFECTED.” It is not a virus, and only begin to worry if you start having talking triangles on your genitalia….

Then worry A LOT.

Superbowl Commercials

I forgot to post my review of the Superbowl commercials!
A great website resource is http://sports.aol.com/nfl/superbowlads. You can watch all the ads, plus they list them all. Great site. That said, here are my picks of best, freakiest and notable mention.

My favorite was the Budweiser Rocky ad. Very nicely done!

Next up, the Planters Unibrow. Disturbing, but yeah, who can resist the smell of peanuts?

I also liked the FedEx pigeons commercial. Mostly for when the GeoMetro lands next to the two men and he beeps it, showing it is HIS and the Garmin Napoleon commercial. Especially when they lead out the pony, ha!
This one is pretty silly. There were a few in this line, where they used the website instead of a freaky alternative choice. The actor in this is from the TV show Bones, so this one, I prefer.

I am going to link to the Chunk of Love and Shaq commercial, because the idea of Shaq on a Thoroughbred is just too funny.

the Bridgestone Russell Simmons commercial, FUNNY. This is especially funny because of all the infomercials for his new DVD set of Sweatin’ to the oldies that are being re-released.

aw, i like this one!

I wish this one was higher up, what with all the party crap that is going on in Washington

Finally, the WORST and best is TOTALLY the amp commercial.

I hope you enjoyed my list of the most interesting and notables in this years Super Bowl line up! Congrats to the Giants!

Happy Valentine’s Day

lovehearts

Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14. It is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other; sending Valentine’s cards, or offering candy. It is very common to present flowers on Valentine’s Day. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

Pick up a great romance for your sweetheart today! (at your local independent of course!)

Oh, and on this day, when you go into a store, please don’t say, “are these ALL you have left for cards?” No one appreciates it!

Light of the Moon

Light of the Moon is Luanne Rice’s newest novel. It takes place mostly in France, but our main female character is from Connecticut. I have never read anything by Luanne Rice before, and I enjoyed this experience. At our bookstore we have, what we call, “Calgon-Take-Me-Away” reading. This is definitely in that catergory. It is the story of a woman who goes to France, to visit the white horses of the Camargue.
horsesoncamargue from puzzlehouse.com

The story begins with a vacationing woman being swept off her feet, literally. Beyond the entertainment value of this story, I believe that this book could help someone deal with grief in a way that books found in the grieving section never could. The death of Susannah’s mother, and the loss of Sari’s mother ties together in a way that could help people accept the grieving process. While some loss is dealt with though time like Susannah with her mother, other forms can be even more scarring. The manner in which Sari loses her mother, with the pain of the following accident, keeps her trapped in the grief of her five year old self, even though eight years have passed.

If you feel like reading a classic or a literary tome, this will not fit the bill. If you feel like being swept away by other people’s problems (in France no less), then check out Light of the Moon. It was a delightful story, but if you are anything like me, find the tissues BEFORE YOU START. It will make everything much easier. Look for this new novel at your local independent bookshop now!

Help the People of Burma — Post this Meme on Your Blog!

Note: This is a new kind of online protest that uses blogs to spread a petition globally. To participate, just add your blog by following the instructions in this blog post.

This not an issue of partisan politics, this is an issue of basic human rights and democracy. Please help to prevent a human tragedy in Burma by adding your blog and asking others to do the same.

By passing this meme on through the blogosphere hopefully we can generate more awareness and avert a serious tragedy. As concerned world-citizens this is something we bloggers can do to help.

How to participate:
1. Copy this entire post to your blog, including this special number: 1081081081234

2. After a few days, you can search Google for the number 1081081081234 to find all blogs that are participating in this protest and petition. Note: Google indexes blogs at different rates, so it could take longer for your blog to show up in the results.

3. If you know how to add tags to your blog posts, add the Technorati tag 1081081081234 to your post as well. This will make your post findable sooner in Technorati.

THE SITUATION IN BURMA AND WHY IT MATTERS TO ALL OF US
There is no press freedom in Burma and the government has started turning off the Internet and other means of communication, so it is difficult to get news out. Individuals on the ground have been sending their day-by-day reports to the BBC, and they are heartbreaking. I encourage you to read these accounts to see for yourself what is really going on in Burma. Please include this link in your own blog post.

The situation in Burma is increasingly dangerous. Hundreds of thousands of unarmed peaceful protesters, including monks and nuns, are risking their lives to march for democracy against an unpopular but well-armed military dictatorship that will stop at nothing to continue its repressive rule. While the generals in power and their families are literally dripping in gold and diamonds, the people of Burma are impoverished, deprived of basic human rights, cut off from the rest of the world, and increasingly under threat of violence.

This week the people of Burma have risen up collectively in the largest public demonstrations against the ruling Junta in decades. It’s an amazing show of bravery, decency, and democracy in action. But although these protests are peaceful, the military rulers are starting to crack down with violence. Already there have been at least several reported deaths, and hundreds of critical injuries from soldiers beating unarmed civilians to the point of death.

The actual fatalities and injuries are probably far worse, but the only news we have is coming from individuals who are sneaking reports past the authorities. Unfortunately it looks like a large-scale blood-bath may ensue — and the victims will be mostly women, children, the elderly and unarmed monks and nuns.

Contrary to what the Burmese, Chinese and Russian governments have stated, this is not merely a local internal political issue, it is an issue of global importance and it affects the global community. As concerned citizens, we cannot allow any government anywhere in the world to use its military to attack and kill peacefully demonstrating, unarmed citizens.

In this modern day and age violence against unarmed civilians is unacceptable and if it is allowed to happen, without serious consequences for the perpetrators, it creates a precedent for it to happen again somewhere else.

If we want a more peaceful world, it is up to each of us to make a personal stand on these fundamental issues whenever they arise.

Please join me in calling on the Burmese government to negotiate peacefully with its citizens, and on China to intervene to prevent further violence. And please help to raise awareness of the developing situation in Burma so that hopefully we can avert a large-scale human disaster there.
