Post-Eclipse
I finished Eclipse. (yes a while ago, but summer is busy, what can I say!) Wowsers was it good!
I had ONE MAJOR PROBLEM with it though… I bet a LOT of you shared my dilemma……
I could not IMMEDIATELY sit down and read book 4… other than that, I loved it. Good news Breaking Dawn is scheduled to be released in the fall of 2008, so hope is near… not TERRIBLY near, but near enough.
ABC has a video interview with Stephenie, linked here, and yeah, its a fun interview. :). My favorite line in the interview,
“There are so many heroes out there who have super magical powers and they can do these great things. I identify more easily with someone who is just human. And I think that’s a lot of [Bella's] appeal. All of us can understand being just human.”
Eclipse was wonderful, and don’t forget that Stephenie is touring across the country, and I will be at the Mass signing.

Hindi Bindi
The Hindi Bindi Club was released at the beginning of the summer. It has sold really well at our store as a great beach read. We got some promotional items before it came out. Gorgeous paper with an actual jewel, filled out like an invitation, very snazzy. Here was our promotional kit.

A close-up of the “invitation.”

It looks to be a fun novel. Check out the Website for even more information, and in the meantime, a blurb from the site,
Between mothers and daughters lies a very special world. Follow the relationships of two very different generations of women with everything to learn from each other…
For decades, they’ve gathered together, dressed in saris and sweater sets, to share recipes, arguments, and laughter. They are the Hindi-Bindi Club, a nickname given by their American daughters to the mothers who left India to start life anew. Daughters, now grown, and facing struggles of their own.
Kiran, Preity, and Rani are coming home for the holidays. Home to the suburbs of Washington, D.C., and of course, to the Hindi-Bindi Club. For what holiday would be complete without their mother hens’ mouthwatering food, their gossip - and their unsolicited advice? For Kiran, a successful career can’t fill the void left by her estrangement from her parents. Five years and one divorce later, she’s ready to mend fences… and find a new husband the old-fashioned way. Good girl Preity’s marriage is nearly perfect, but lately she’s haunted by the memory of her first love-and her mother’s interference in that romance. Then there’s Rani, the wild child with the brains of a rocket scientist - and the weight of a dark burden she’s carried all her life.
Now, as East meets West across time and tradition, six women will take their first steps toward true sisterhood, shattering long-kept secrets, sharing joy and tears, and allowing the real power of the Hindi-Bindi Club to take hold.
And a review,
“At the beginning of this debut novel, American-born Kiran Deshpande returns home as the divorced prodigal daughter of Indian parents. But her story quickly unfolds into the larger tale of her mother, Meenal, and Meenal’s friends, whom Kiran and her childhood friends Preity and Rani had dubbed the Hindi-Bindi Club because of their old-fashioned Indian ways. Each chapter is narrated by a different character and explores the diverse experiences of these mothers, daughers, and wives who struggle to be Indian and American. Readers learn about cherished family recipes and the history that brought these women to the present. Pradhan imbues the narrative with such honesty and real emotion that the novel is difficult to put down. Highly recommended for readers who enjoy mother-daughter fiction and all popular fiction collections.”

Harry Potter and the Crazy rules.
Harry Potter, ah the wonder of it all. Needless to say, I loved it. I think that Harry Potter is a fabulous series of books, and that some people might want to relax a little bit and just remember, it is a KIDS BOOK SERIES. It has made kids read like there is no tomorrow, made ADULTS read like there is no tomorrow and created an international sensation, about a sad little orphan boy with great friends.
The rules about Harry for purchase as a bookstore were pretty intense. We ordered through Scholastic, and part of our contract, besides not selling the book ahead of time (duh…) was that we could not share how many we ordered or how many we sold each day. Very interesting. Also, something that I liked was that you could not order more of book 7 than you had SOLD of book 6. This would be books ordered minus books returned after the hubbub wore off for the Half-Blood Prince. Not a problem for us.
Here is a cut-out from the Ingram Advance catalog. According to this, for guaranteed delivery through Ingram, you had to have a signed affidavit, an agreement to the street day, have ordered before April 27th, AND all orders had to be in case quantities of 10 books.
There was some weirdness about the April 27th deadline. Apparently libraries across the country were not told about the deadline, so they were all faxing in their orders on the 27th, which needless to say made a giant busy signal to all those crazed librarians. We actually had a library from the southern corner of the state (librarian is the daughter to a local librarian) order through us because it was easier.
It is sad that the craze is over. JK Rowling did not say “never” to any more Harry Potters, but I think it is safe to say it would be a long long long while before she writes any more in the Potter-verse. However…. I cannot wait until that day, however unlikely it is!
