Rest in Peace to a true Performer.
Many of you may have seen the videos, “Bing, I’m a guinea pig.”
I have the sad news that both Bing and his brother Frank passed away this week.
So much support goes to their mom. She was a truly devoted guinea pig mom and the happiness of her pigs showed that.
I knew Bing and his mom through Livejournal, and there is indeed a fanclub to Bing at the Bing’s Fan community.
In honor of Bing and Frank, please go to the site and watch a video. They were truly great pigs and will be MUCH missed by all who knew them in any way.

NHPR Summer Book Preview
NHPR did their Annual Summer Book preview. Hosted by Laura Knoy, and the guests were Dan Chartrand, owner of Water Street Bookstore in Exeter and Michael Herrmann, owner of Gibson’s Bookstore in Concord.
Their TOP books for the summer:
Robert Olmstead’s Coal Black Horse. If you remember, I read this and was not overwhelmed by it. I read the fluffier books and I just did not care for this. However, the recommender described it as a book that will change you as you read it and it will stay with you long after you finish. And for sheer practicality… it DOES have a gorgeous cover!
Marylin Robinson’s Gilead. This book has sold very well at my bookstore since it came out last year in paperback. It is a letter from an older minister to his son. Sounds really interesting.
Head over to NHPR.org for their Full Top Ten Lists.
They also talked about Post-Harry Potter books. They recommended “His Dark Materials” series by Phillip Pullman (Golden Compass), Tanglewreck by Jeannette Winterson. L’Engle’s Wrinkle in Time and Mary Stewart’s Merlin trilogy were also recommended by callers.
NHPR.org has one commenter who posted most of the books that people called in on. Thanks to Brady for that by the way!
So that was definitely a fun hour, hope this helps you pick out your summer reading!!! Make sure you check out the site and look at the top ten lists!!!

Publisher Comments:
Life is looking up for D.J. Schwenk. She’s in eleventh grade, finally. After a rocky summer, she’s reconnecting in a big way with her best friend, Amber. She’s got kind of a thing going with Brian Nelson, who’s cute and popular and smart but seems to like her anyway. And then there’s the fact she’s starting for the Red Bend High School football team—the first girl linebacker in northern Wisconsin, probably. Which just shows you can’t predict the future. As autumn progresses, D.J. struggles to understand Amber, Schwenk Farm, her relationship with Brian, and most of all her family. As a whole herd of trouble comes her way, she discovers she’s a lot stronger than she—or anyone—ever thought. This hilarious, heartbreaking and triumphant sequel to the critically acclaimed Dairy Queen takes D.J. and all the Schwenks from Labor Day to a Thanksgiving football game that you will never forget.

Gentle Readers… I need your help
Here is the thing. I have read so many books, but I can’t remember all of them. Sometimes… heaven forbid, I give away/lose/ruin/throw away a book, but then I can’t remember what it was.
I would like your help to figure out what this romance novel is. Please?
Main character female: she writes, the big joke is that she wears gloves to cover the ink stains… I think she supports her family by selling her writing
Main character male: he is owner of the house on the hill… scary nickname like stoneface/spike/sword… something like that (as in all romance novels, he is called by the last time, it is something forboding… but I can’t remember)
I think that she might write gothic romances of her own… and she sees him as a character? maybe…. and I think that his previous wife might have gone insane and killed herself.
So… might that help? If you know what it is (and its been out for a few years now), please PLEASE please comment and let me know!!!
Thanks!

More bad news…
The television network, the CW, cancelled Veronica Mars.
Ugh, the bastards.
Honestly, I am sorry for the harsh langauge, but seriously. You cannot go wrong with VMars. It is just GREAT.
G
R
E
A
T.
Or it was. Until they Cancelled it.
From The Washington Post article
The CW network canceled the cult hit “Veronica Mars” and will try to pick up steam in its second year with series about the snobby rich, transplanted families and a bounty hunter for the devil.
The network, created out of the ashes of the former WB and UPN, had already ended the long-running family dramas “7th Heaven” and “Gilmore Girls.” On Thursday the ax fell on “Veronica Mars,” which starred Kristen Bell as a wisecracking teenage private eye.
And yes, I know this is not related at all to books, but it is upsetting to me, and Dear Readers, I know you care. And if there is any pickup news (there are rumors that the CW has another month to completely give up on Veronica, I’ll post it for you!)

An incredible loss to Children’s books.
Lloyd Alexander died today. I adored the Vesper Holly series. I thought they were the best things written for quite a long while. It is just such a loss.
From Wikipedia,
Lloyd Chudley Alexander (January 30, 1924 - May 17, 2007) is the author of more than forty books, mostly fantasy books for children and adolescents, as well as several adult novels. Probably his most famous contribution to the field of children’s fantasy is The Chronicles of Prydain, inspired by Welsh mythology and the Mabinogion. The first two books in this series formed the basis of the Disney animated film The Black Cauldron. The concluding book of the series, The High King was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1969.
From SF Scope,
Author Lloyd Alexander died 17 May 2007. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 30 January 1924, he was a children’s fantasy author for half a century (though he did also write several adult novels). He won the 1970 Newbery Award, and was a National Book Award Finalist, for The High King.
Before becoming the writer he’d always wanted to be, Alexander served in the US Army during World War II, working in intelligence. In 1946, he married Janine Denni, who predeceased him by two weeks.
He is a man who left a legacy in his own life (being married for 62 years) and in the writing world and will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace Mr. Alexander.
