Additionally, from my post on Stephenie Meyer’s new book Eclipse and her original Twilight and New Moon you can tell that I LOVE Stephenie Meyer.
Put Stephenie Meyer together with Stephen Colbert, and PRESTO CHANGO you get this video. Watch and enjoy my friends!

Swimming 100% off topic here.
Our friend Cliff just went diving in the Revillagigedo Archipelago. It looks like he had an AMAZING time and even got some cool videos. One is of a Manta, and honestly, just watch them glide, its mesmerizing. Another is of a wild dolphin that decided to hang with the silly humans!
These are not Cliffy’s pictures, though he has some GREAT shots in his Photo Gallery, but here are some cool images of one of the islands he dived. The first is an image of the wakes. Ikes!

This one is just a pretty fish, because you can never see too many pretty fish.

My family and I recently visited the New England Aqurium in Boston Mass and got to see some of the same animals Cliff saw. I recommend reading Cliff’s blog AND visiting the NE Aquarium!

Beautiful Mail
We got this envelope at the bookshop and seriously, I thought it was an engagement letter or something. Amazing envelope and then the calligraphy, wow. seriously… WOW
Of course, we open it, and no, no engagement letter. It is in fact a promotion for Kate DiCamillo’s new and upcoming children’s book. By new and upcoming I mean of course… October. Yeah, October 9th 2007. A bit early?
You can see what I mean by the writing and the envelope. (Sorry about the smudges. I have a recuperating chicken in my dining room and she splashed water. Silly Bird.)
Here is another picture with an illustration. If you have read Edward Tulane then you know that she used BEAUTIFUL illustrations throughout the book. It appears she shall do so again!

There is not much information about “Great Joy” yet, but my guess is that it will be a Holiday story. We shall see if I am correct.
Here is a quote from Kate’s website on writing that I especially liked.
[My teacher] did know what he was talking about. Writing is seeing. It is paying attention.
I think of it this way: my characters sing songs and I stop to listen to them and when the song is done I give them my money and they say, “God bless you, baby.”
And I feel that I have been blessed. Over and over again.
So the moral of the story is, you never know what you may get in the mail. Even the beautiful things may surprise you. When October rolls around, check out Kate’s newest!

Prom Nights from HELL
An American High School tradition, the Prom Night… (do other countries have proms?) However, it is not always perfection. Sometimes (think Buffy in the original movie of Buffy the Vampire Slayer) our prom nights end in disaster. And, it is always fun to read about OTHERS misfortunes. Along that idea, Meg Cabot, Stephenie Meyer, Kim Harrison, Michele Jaffe and Lauren Myracle have brought us, Prom Nights from Hell.
From the Harper Collins website for the book,
Prom Nights from Hell
by Meg Cabot, Stephenie Meyer, Kim Harrison, Lauren Myracle and Michele JaffeIn this exciting collection, bestselling authors Meg Cabot (How to Be Popular), Kim Harrison (A Fistful of Charms), Michele Jaffe (Bad Kitty), Stephenie Meyer (Twilight), and Lauren Myracle (ttyl) take bad prom nights to a whole new level—a paranormally bad level. Wardrobe malfunctions and two left feet don’t hold a candle to discovering your date is the Grim Reaper—and he isn’t here to tell you how hot you look.
From angels fighting demons to a creepy take on getting what you wish for, these five stories will entertain better than any DJ in a bad tux. No corsage or limo rental necessary. Just good, scary fun.
That site also connects you to the individual author’s sites.

We all know that this blog LOVES Stephenie Meyer. Also Meg Cabot, with strong interest in Kim Harrison. I like others in the same blogging genre as Myracle though I have yet to read her stuff (think back to my blog post on Shana Norris’s new 2008 title Libby Fawcett, same idea). I need to do some research into Jaffe as I have not heard of her before. But she is hobnobbing with some good folk, and connections are everything in this business!
It has a book embargo for April 24th this year, (right at the beginning of PROM SEASON!!!) so check it out at your local independent bookshop!

“Walking Spanish down the hall”
A new unique idea for promotional tools, and one that will really stick with you. This cube of note-pad paper is for promotion of Then We Came to the End by Joshua Ferris.

Released on March 18, 2007, this new novel is available for purchase everywhere. When you walk into your store, see if THEY are using their cubes, if they were lucky enough to get one! Onto the reviews!
Here is a review from the New York Times writer James Poniewozik.
It is a brave author who embeds the rationale for writing his novel into the novel itself. But 70 pages into Joshua Ferris’s first novel, set in a white-collar office, we meet Hank Neary, an advertising copywriter writing his first novel, set in a white-collar office. Ferris has the good sense to make Neary’s earnest project seem slightly ridiculous. Neary describes his book as “small and angry.†His co-workers tactfully suggest more appealing topics. He rejects them. “The fact that we spend most of our lives at work, that interests me,†he says. “A small, angry book about work,†his colleagues think. “There was a fun read on the beach.â€
…
Above all, Ferris has a sixth sense for paranoia. Information professionals crave information, and when it is denied them — who is going next, how many and why — they spin superstitious theories and adopt curious totems. The employees discover that the office coordinator keeps tabs on which furniture belongs in which offices, and they fear that their chairs — scavenged from laid-off peers with better furniture, in a round-robin so complex no one remembers whose Aeron was originally whose — will get them fired. The chair becomes a symbol for all that is hated and lusted-after about work. It is a prison and a status symbol, a reminder that “their†offices are not really their own, a means of exercising minor tyranny, a reward, a throne, a life preserver.
And from that same link, the first chapter of the novel.
WE WERE FRACTIOUS AND overpaid. Our mornings lacked promise. At least those of us who smoked had something to look forward to at ten-fifteen. Most of us liked most everyone, a few of us hated specific individuals, one or two people loved everyone and everything. Those who loved everyone were unanimously reviled. We loved free bagels in the morning. They happened all too infrequently. Our benefits were astonishing in comprehensiveness and quality of care. Sometimes we questioned whether they were worth it. We thought moving to India might be better, or going back to nursing school. Doing something with the handicapped or working with our hands. No one ever acted on these impulses, despite their daily, sometimes hourly contractions. Instead we met in conference rooms to discuss the issues of the day.
FYI, “Walking Spanish down the hall” is the axiom for getting fired in the novel. So go check out this hilarious debut novel, all the reviews give the impression that you Won’t regret it. Remember the book is already in stores now so go check out your local independent bookshop and pick it up.

Summer Book Signings
More personal information. I work at the FABULOUS, SUPREME, AMAZING, Innisfree Bookshop in Meredith New Hampshire. A jewel among bookshops, let me assure you. We are part of the Mill Falls Marketplace and if you click on Innisfree Bookshop on that list (alphabetical…) you can see my shop! I personally worked there in high school and college and am now a Full-time member of the Innisfree Team.
Now onto the JUICY stuff. The booksignings. (I began running these events last year, actually using it as my internship for my Senior Internship class for college.) This is my second year and it should be even better than ever!!! So far we just have two fabulous ladies reserved. But oh the fabulousness!!!
Barbara Delinsky will be at the shop on Saturday July 7th from 2:00-4:00 pm. She always draws a large crowd, but seriously, NICEST lady there ever was. Tanya on staff and I had gone hiking last summer and who did we see? Thats right, Barbara. The Joy of a small town. Barbara’s new book is Family Tree. From her website,
When a white couple gives birth to a baby with distinctly black features, a family is thrown into turmoil….Family Tree delves into issues of trust, honesty, privilege, and identity. It debates the way we define ourselves, and explores the duplicity of political correctness and personal prejudice.
Later on in July, Jodi Picoult will be joining us on Wednesday July 25th from 1:00-3:00 pm. This is a change from our regular Saturday from 2:00-4:00 setup, but that was the only time she was available, so presto!
A Publisher’s Weekly, STARRED review,
Bestseller Picoult takes on another contemporary hot-button issue in her brilliantly told new thriller…the author’s insights into her characters’ deep-seated emotions brings this ripped-from-the-headlines read chillingly alive.â€
And a description from her website,
In Sterling, New Hampshire, 17-year-old high school student Peter Houghton has endured years of verbal and physical abuse at the hands of classmates. His best friend, Josie Cormier, succumbed to peer pressure and now hangs out with the popular crowd that often instigates the harassment. One final incident of bullying sends Peter over the edge and leads him to commit an act of violence that forever changes the lives of Sterling’s residents.
Rich with psychological and social insight, Nineteen Minutes is a riveting, poignant, and thought-provoking novel that has at its center a haunting question. Do we ever really know someone?
There has been some debate over this book. The fictional town of Sterling New Hampshire is incredibly similar to Hanover, where Jodi lives. Not surprising… but because the town and the high school are so similar to the real town and the real high school, even though the events in the novel have never happened in real life, Hanover High School has decided to remove Nineteen Minutes from its required reading list. This does not mean the book is banned. There was a class where Nineteen Minutes was going to be required for all students to read. They just knocked it down to voluntary. The students (about half of which decided to read the book regardless of required versus not) were allowed early editions to study as part of a class.
My favorite quote, from an associated press article, here at the The copycateffect.blogspot.com,
Picoult said in one class, Nineteen Minutes was being taught alongside James Dickey’s Deliverance, which depicts sodomy and violence, Vladimir Nabokov’s child-sex novel Lolita, and Anthony Burgess’ violent The Clockwork Orange.
“I don’t know really what makes ‘Lolita’ any less disturbing than Nineteen Minutes, †she said. – - Beverley Wang, reporter, The Associated Press
These are the two authors that are so far confirmed, but I shall update as more choose their day!

Picoult… Comic Book Writer

DC’s Wonder Woman finally gets a top level female author!!! Here is an interview with Jodi who is a new writer in the Comic world, writing Wonder Woman. And a Quote from that interview!
NRAMA: Right, efforts to give her an identity in the past have usually involved depowering her…
JP: Right, and that takes me back to the guys who were writing her. I don’t know why she’s always victimized, because to me, that’s one of the most attractive things about Wonder Woman – she is the most powerful woman! And that’s an amazing and wonderful thing.
I think that there’s a difference between having insecurities at an emotional level, and having insecurities at a physical level. And that becomes a very interesting conundrum. What if you can punch a hole through a wall, and you can get yourself out of any physical mess necessary, and you are strength-matched to someone like Superman, but you are a little unsure about who you are, deep inside, and how you want others to see you?
And from a Comiccon.com article,
Since it’s still several months away, Picoult didn’t want to spoil anything about her upcoming story, but noted she did try for one change in the character. “I actually tried to get Wonder Woman a breast reduction,” Picoult joked. “DC didn’t go for it. As a woman writing this, I thought, ‘there’s no way I would fight crime in a bustier,’ but I was overruled. Comic books will always be a venue for teenage boys, so the costume stays!”
I don’t have my copies of the Wonder Woman comic, but I will soon, have no fear. And then at Jodi’s booksigning, (more on that later), I will get them autographed. Its a good life. So if you like comics (or regardless, support your local authors!) pick up Wonder Woman by Jodi Picoult on March 28th!
